Itoigawa Jade is officially recognised as Japan's national stone in 2016 by the Japan Association of Mineralogical Sciences for its geological importance, ancient cultural heritage and beauty. It is found mainly in the Itoigawa-Omi region of Niigata Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast.
